Sawa's Library of Magic: Volume One

FOREWORD: I feel very honored for being asked to state a few words as an introduction to this book. To me, Sawa is the epitome of what a truly great practitioner of the magical art should be. His plots and effects are genuinely poetic. His unseen and unsuspected sleights blend beautifully and artistically to create a faultless illusion. Words really cannot do justice to some of the delightful surprises that occur during one of his exhibitions. Originality tingles from his fingertips and he present these magical moments in a most fascinating fashion. I greatly regret that in my early days I never had an opportunity to watch such a superlative artist perform. Please consider yourself very fortunate to have this genius in the art pass on to you some of his cherished secrets. Long may he live and continue to contribute his diabolically ingenious inventions. Introduction

Michael Skinner shares stories about his visits with Sawa. Plus, Skinner's brief description of "Sawa's Bank Routine," the "James Bond, 007 Routine," and a routine with Franklin fifty-cent pieces and musical notes.

Coins

14

A silver dollar is displayed. With a wave of the hand it changes into two half dollars. The two half dollars are shown (one in each hand). The half dollars are brought together and transform back into the silver dollar.

20

The same effect as previous, but with an extra set of transformations. While Method #1 uses the Purse Palm, Back Clip, Classic Palm with the Malini Subtlety, and Tenkai Pinch, Method 2 uses the Tenkai Pinch of 2 half-dollars in one hand, and the Classic Palm with the Malini Subtlety.

24

A silver dollar is transformed into two half dollars. Then the two half dollars are transformed into four quarters.

27

The same effect as previous. Method 1 has four quarters concealed in Tenkai Pinch in one hand and two half dollars in Tenkai Pinch in the other. Plus the Malini Subtlety. Method 2 uses the Classic Palm (palming four quarters and two half dollars in the same hand but in separate stacks) and sleeving.

30

Magician displays two invisible coins, one on each hand. The two coins become visible. Then both coins vanish and a purse appears at the fingertips. The purse is opened and both visible coins drop out.

34

The same effect as previous. Method 1 has the small purse concealed in Tenkai Pinch in one hand, and a half dollar concealed in Tenkai Pinch in the other. Method 2 has a silver dollar concealed in Classic Palm, and the purse hidden in the opposite sleeve.

36

Three half dollars and one penny are shown. A penny is given to a beggar but the magician still has three silver coins and a penny. This is repeated, but three silver coins and a penny remain. This is repeated, but now the magician has only one silver coin so they beg for the return of the pennies.

40

Same effect as previous. Method 1 has two English pennies concealed in left hand Tenkai Pinch and uses the Classic Palm with the Malini Subtlety. Method 2 uses the Classic Palm with the Malini Subtlety.

Cards

44

Four cards are selected. The magician produces two triangular pieces of card. By cleverly rearranging the two pieces and obscuring parts of the cards the magician reveals the predicted cards: QC, 3D, AD, and finally the 10S.

49

A card is selected and returned. The cards are shuffled face up into face down. The cards are cut several times to display the mixed nature of the cards. When the cards are fanned and only the selection is reversed. Can be performed entirely in the hands without use of a table.

52

Magician attempts to find the selected card but fails multiple times. The magician begin to cry and tears drip down onto the table. The tears are gathered and condensed into a giant (and solid) teardrop. The missed cards transforms into the selection and mates of the selection.

55

A card is selected. A prediction card is removed from the coat pocket, but it is wrong. Another card is revealed, but it is wrong. A third prediction is wrong. But the audience has been looking at the “back design” of a jumbo card. The face of the jumbo card is shown and the prediction is correct.

57

A card is selected. The ink on the card is very heavy. The card is held vertically with the long side down and tapped on the deck. When the card is turned over all the pips have all fallen to one side. The short side of the card is tapped on the deck. Now all the pips have gathered in one corner.

60

Not related to Roy Walton's Collectors. A card is selected. The face up selection (AC) is rubbed on the face down deck and the other three aces appear face up. The four aces change into the AC, 2C, 3C, and 4C which are placed face up in the deck. When the deck is spread all 13 clubs appear face up.

63

A Progressive Ace Assembly. The Aces are laid out in a row and three indifferent cards are placed on each Ace. The Ace vanishes from the 1st pile to join the Ace in the 2nd pile. These Aces vanish from the 2nd pile to join the Ace in the 3rd pile. Then one at a time the Aces appear in the 4th pile.

70

Four red cards and four black cards are alternated in color. When the cards are spread between the hands, the colors are seen to have separated. The cards are shaken and once again the colors alternate. When spread again the cards separate into red and blacks. The cards are held face up throughout.
