What's New
[waves arms around] Everything! It would be tedious and unhelpful to list off every little thing which has been built into the system at launch, but for sake of setting a benchmark I'll paint the big picture.
Library
- Basic functionality to view Editions (which could be a book, magazine, DVD, or any other unit of media) and create a table of contents for the Items inside.
- Editions can be organized into Series, such as volumes of a set or issues of a periodical.
- People and Companies may be connected to records according to their role in that work.
- Items may be added in bulk from raw text, using short-hand codes to define different types. There is also an option to upload a photo of a Table of Contents for OCR processing.
- Items may be tagged for organization around shared concepts.
- While it's under-developed at the moment, the basic function of adding multiple Editions of the same Title, either as a reprint (exact same contents) or revision (with distinct contents)
Collections
- A User has two built-in collections; My Library (what you already own) and My Wishlist (what you want to own). You can add Editions to these collections.
- Users may also create custom Collections which can collect both Editions and Items, whether you want to create a list of favourite books, or favourite Ace Assemby routines.
- Collections may be made public, which means the contents are visible under your profile. This is for sharing those favourite Ace Assemblies with the world.
Search
- Ability to search by title/name for Editions, People and Companies.
- Attempting an "infinite scroll" display rather than paged results. We'll see if this remains efficient as the database grows.
User Accounts
- While the basic functionality is built, User accounts are currently closed for this initial launch until the interactive features have been well-tested.
- In its primary goal as a research tool, in addition to custom collections Users can add private Notes to records which are attached on teh record as well as viewable in a list of all your notes.
- Users also have the ability to make use of private tags on items, where they can create their personal organization structure.
- Basic system of points (and badges!) which are earned for interaction with the library.
Short-Term Roadmap
These are my goals for devlopment in the next month. Generally I will be personally using the live site, creating and interacting with records, to figure out what's working, what's not, and what's missing.
Library
- Working towards making it intuitive for Users to add and edit the library records in order to safely crowd-source the research effort. The specific target is to have Users be able to add a new Edition along with its contents.
- Improve on the content moderation system, so Librarians may audit record updates and approve new records before they go live.
- There's currently no UI for updating information regarding a Company, so... add that.
Collections
- Improve the function of My Library as it pertains to multiple versions of an Edition. Allow users to own more than one copy, and better display which printing has been collected.
Search
While I want to upgrade to a more robust search engine, that does require some technical infrastructure, which comes with monthly service fees. While the database is so... empty... it doesn't seem worthwhile for now.
- Improve filtering with current technology, particularly to filter out magazines from the Edition search.
- Add ability to search for Items.
User Accounts
- The big goal is to open the doors for everyone to create their User account and get started building their collections.
- Build on the User points system to grant priviledges (ability to update/edit) according to some measurement of trust. (so new or inactive users can't break anything)
